BCS Standings

Top 9 unchanged in BCS standings

The annual BCS puzzle looks fairly clear this year.

Notre Dame, which completed an undefeated regular season Saturday, is No. 1 in the latest BCS standings and has secured a spot in the Discover BCS National Championship Game.

The Fighting Irish will almost certainly play the winner of the SEC Championship Game, to be played Saturday between No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia.

The top 9 teams remained unchanged in this week's standings. Next Sunday's edition is the final one of the 2012 season.

After the championship, the BCS picture is still as murky as the Florida swamps. The No. 4 Gators could secure a bid in the Allstate Sugar Bowl if they pass the Alabama-Georgia loser in next week's standings.

"If you think about what the game means, this that and the other, it doesn't really help you win the game," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "The only thing that helps you win the game is preparation and getting your mind ready to go to battle. That's what you've got to do."

If the loser of the SEC championship falls below Florida, it could find itself out of the BCS picture altogether because the No. 3 team is guaranteed a BCS bowl bid and no more than two schools per conference can receive bids.

"For either one of these teams, it's not really a great scenario," Alabama coach Nick Saban said.

At the other end of the standings, No. 17 Kent State (11-1) is just one place away from earning a spot in a BCS bowl after moving up six places this week.

The Golden Flashes play No. 21 Northern Illinois in the Mid-American Conference championship on Friday. If the winner of that game moves up to No. 16 and remains ahead of a conference champion from an automatic-qualifying school, it will crash the BCS party.

The MAC has never sent a team to the BCS.

There is no Big East team ranked in the top 25, and there is room for Kent State to move up if No. 16 UCLA loses to No. 8 Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship Game on Friday and No. 18 Texas loses at No. 6 Kansas State.

No. 20 Boise State also has an outside chance to break into the top 16. The Broncos play Nevada on Saturday to earn a share of the Mountain West title.

The team that could be hurt most if a BCS buster emerges is No. 11 Oklahoma. With a final victory against TCU, they would seem to be in good shape to get into the BCS even if Kansas State clinches the Big 12 by beating Texas. But that at-large spot could get gobbled up by a BCS buster.

The other big movers in this week's standings came from the ACC. No. 13 Florida State dropped three spots after losing to Florida on Saturday, and No. 14 Clemson also fell three spots after losing to South Carolina, which cracked the top 10.

The Pac-12 was more fortunate. UCLA actually moved up one spot to No. 16 after losing to Stanford, and No. 15 Oregon State did not move after losing to No. 5 Oregon.

Walking your stock

The holiday weekend is over and back to reality for alot of folks.  But I always figured after memorial day weekend you probably should be thinking about getting you stock out of their pens and start to take them on small walks in your excercise area.  This is going to cut down on alot of problems later.

Congrats Collin Kreger

Congrats to Collin Kreger!  Grand Overall @ Cass Co. MI jackpot show today.  Sold in our March online sale.  Congrats on grabbin a banner Collin!  Pics to come.

Heat

Keeping your stock cool and comfortable this season is vital to their growth and performance.  They need to be able to get out of the direct sunlight and have adequate, clean, fresh water at all times.  And no, a stock tank is not acceptable for pigs.   Remember if your pig doesn't drink, they don't eat either.  You may consider a fan or some way to move the air in their environment.  Also if you are concerned about your projects intake do to the heat you may want to supplement a low dose of electrolytes.  This will help your project stay hydrated.  Good luck and beat the heat!

Here we go again.

Once again, there is a difference between a showpig that is good now and one that will grab a banner in August.  If you are confused by this statement, start visiting with those that are successful.  Good luck to all jackpot exhibitors this weekend.  Safe travels!

Saturday, May 5, 2012

Hang in there!

Remember that a good showpig cannot look great everyday.  It really only matters what they look like the day of your targeted show.  Don't give up on your project because they have not looked the part for a week or so.  Usually the ones that win in in August, don't start looking like showpigs till they reach 150# - 175#.  If the basics of the animal are right, you got a shot!

Tuesday, May 1, 2012

By now you probably have your projects home and thinking what next.  The first thing on the management list, would be to make sure everything is healthy.  Communicate with the breeder or breeders that you have purchased from and find out what they have been vaccinated with.  If you think you may need to give a booster, visit with your vet.  Never vaccinate any animals if they are not healthy, it will only make things worse.

Health and Weather

Well getting ready to head to Richmond, IN for the NSR Extravaganza and wanted to share some thoughts with you.  As we travel from all parts of the country to purchase pigs at this event or to pick up pre purchased stock, be aware of the weather conditions.  This week looks like one that can shape up to be hard on livestock again.  We will be warm during the day and cool at night(perfect for sick stock) not to mention we are going to stress them by moving them and hauling them to new locations.  Be aware of moisture, heat, cold and feed/water intake.  The best advice that I can give you is give your new purchases a shot of draxin or excede to try to minimize any problems that may occur.  Also communicate with the breeder and find out what environment they were in before they were moved.  Safe travels and look forward to visiting with you in Richmond.

Communication!!!!

I urge all buyers of livestock, no matter the species, to communicate with the breeder that you have purchased your stock from.  Make sure if there is a question or a problem, be prompt, swallow your pride and communicate.  This can detour or even prevent problems, bad feelings and accidents that can be prevented.  Communicate!!!!  We can all do a better job.

Curt and Carl Hannon Pig Sale

Was @ Hannon's pig sale on 4-16-12 and wanted to share a pic and some info.  Pigs at the sale looked like a real nice set of feedable stock.  Not lots of problems and not going to cause you any problems either.  Had a very consistant set out of " Hot Wheels"  that they bought from Zedeker a year ago @ crossbred classic.  They sold 30 hd out of that boar and totaled $19,150.  Top sellers were @ $3000, $1900, $1800, $1750, $1550, and $1200.  Not bad for a $2500 dollar purchase!  Congrats to the Hannon Family on a wonderful event. And thanks again for the hospitality.  See you all in Richmond, IN next week and safe travels.

Gilts Gone WIld Final Update!

Thanks to all who supported and purchased gilts in this sale.  Sold 13 hd for $21,200 to OH, IN, WI, CO, TX, IA, GA.  Thanks again and good luck!

#: 29
EN: 109-1 XB
Seller: Zedeker Showpigs
Breed/Sex: Crossbred Boar
Date Born: 2/3/12
Sire: Off the Record
Dam: Heat Wave/Steel Wheels
Description:: We were very excited to get a phone call from Brett asking us to participate in this event for another year. And, were even more excited to hear that there was going to be even more participation this year from new breeders. Hopefully this event will dominate last years successful event. This boar was purposely saved back for a herd boar prospect. But, when Brett called and asked us to participate, we said we had to offer this one. This guy comes from a sow line deep in the purple here at Zedeker Show Pigs. Grandma is a mate to the Res. Grand at The Ohio State Fair in 2010. She also puts in a couple of sale barrows in at Houston in 2012. This one's momma is a littermate to the very popular barrow that we sold on this event last year. Her sisters also raised our 1st, 3rd and 4th high selling barrows this spring. Not to mention that momma is a mate to "Hot Wheels," which is a boar that we sold to Carl and Curt Hannon last year at the Crossbred Classic. Like I said, this guy's sow line is rich in purple! His rib shape is as good as I have seen all spring. This guy is still tall shouldered and balanced. He puts his feet down square, true and in the right direction. His muscle pattern is correct in my mind, for one that will continue to get better with every passing day. He comes at you with as much width and true squareness and leaves you with the same authority. Study the pig and you decide. Buyer decides on leaving him intact or making him a barrow. We will get this guy where ever he needs to go.

Pay Attention!!

As we continue through showpig buying season, I caution you to pay attention to some key identifiers, that will help you decide on which animal may be right for you.  It amazes me how much buyers still get caught up on muscle and mass.  If an animal is starting to track outside of there skeleton and generally they will push off both ends, then maybe we need to let those kind go.  Start by evaluating those babies at the ground.  Make sure they are square, true, don't track outside of their bodies or inside their bodies.  If you can remember this part of the eqaution then you will be infront of the competition day in and day out.  Just another piece of the puzzle that will help Grab a Banner!

Had a good trip to Oklahoma and Texas over the weekend.  First stop was at Mappes Durocs.  Might have seen the most impressive set of red sows in one place.  The Crown Royal babies really look to be the real deal.  Traveling across the green terrain of Oklahoma on I-40, I found myself in Amarillo.  My second and last stop was at Stephens Farms.  Two new boars that I looked at were WTF and Hot Wheels.  Both boars sure did not disappoint.  If need to add some width and muscle, I would look at Hot Wheels.  If you need flesh and bone, you may want to look at WTF.  It was nice to see they are still working on improving I-40 west of Oklahoma City.  Should be alot less bumpy when they are finished.  Good to cows are moving back south to graze on the new green grasses in the south. (Good thing they have gotten some rain)  Have a good week!

Zedeker Show Pig Commercial

Pic to cute not to share

Kevin served as a bid spoter at our friends PSSS annual customer sale and snapped this pic of a cute little swine enthusiast...

Starting bids

All barrows will be starting at a opening bid of $300 you may start placing bids NOW...

Lot 12 --OUT

Hate, when this happens... but this barrow has came up injured, and is will not be sold at this time... we don't think its a major injury but don't feel confident at this time to offer him.... For those who were interested in this barrow if he makes a proper and full recovery, our thinking at this time is to offer him in the Passion for Purple Charity Pig Auctions later in the month...

Thank you
